Banana Poori

Try this banana poori the next time you want to make a sweet after-school snack for your kids. This Indian puffed bread has banana and poppy seeds and makes a  filling and delicious snack. This is an easy recipe.

Bananas are high in potassium and low in sodium, which makes these fruits a great way to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of stroke.

Bananas belong to the category of foods that are wholesome and full of nutrition.

Servings:6-7 (makes 18-20)
Cooking Time: 50 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flourbanana poori
  • A pinch of baking soda
  • A pinch of salt (optional)
  • 2 tbsp poppy seeds (khus-khus)
  • 3/4 cups sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 banana, mashed
  • 1 tsp lime juice
  • Vegetable oil for deep-frying

Preparation

  1. Mix all the ingredients with just enough water to make a stiff dough. Cover and set aside for 15 minutes.

  2. Make 3/4-inch size balls, sprinkle some poppy seeds on the board, and roll  one on the poppy seeds so they stick to the poori, to a thin, even disc about 2.5 inches in diameter.

  3. Heat oil in a frying pan, and fry the poori until puffed up and golden brown. Make sure the oil is not overheated (to determine the right temperature, put a tiny ball of dough in the oil; if it rises to the top immediately, the oil is ready). Place on paper towels to drain excess oil. Repeat with the remaining dough.

  4. Serve the banana poori hot.
