Lemon Dal is what you may want to make if you or your kids are
craving something sour and spicy as well as
nutritious. Made with toor dal (red
gram)
and lemon or lime juice, this is a simple South Indian lentil dish that
tastes great with rice and roti.
Servings: 4 Cooking Time: 15
minutes
Ingredients
1 cup toor dal (red gram)
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
Salt to taste
2-3 tsp of lemon or lime juice
For Seasoning
4 tsp vegetable oil
1/4 tsp hing (asafoetida
powder)
2 1/2 tsp urad dal (split black gram)
1 1/4 tsp mustard seeds (rai)
3-4 green chillies, slit and halved
1-2 red chillies, broken into pieces,
1/4 tsp red chilli powder
4-5 curry leaves
Preparation
Cook the dal in the pressure
cooker with 2 cups of
water and a little turmeric
powder for about 5-6 whistles.
Heat oil in a deep pan. Add hing and urad dal. As the
dal starts to brown,
add the mustard seeds, green chillies, and red
chillies.
When the mustard starts to pop and the chillies start
to brown a bit, add the red
chilli powder and curry leaves. Fry for a
couple of seconds.
Pour the dal in. Add salt and mix the dal with the
seasoning.
Let the dal come to a boil, and let it cool.
When the dal is cool, add the lemon juice and mix
well.
Serve the lemon dal with hot rice and ghee.
Cooking Tip
Be sure to cool the dal before adding the lemon juice; if you add it
when it's hot, the dal will taste bitter.
